The Umbrella Stage Company’s new production of “Hairspray, the Broadway Musical” (April 24–May 17 in Concord) leans into the show’s core of protest, possibility, and youth-driven change—without losing an ounce of its infectious energy.

Director/choreographer Najee A. Brown frames the piece as an act of “joy and radical optimism,” drawing a clear line between 1960s Baltimore and today’s urgent conversations around racial equality, representation and democratic norms.

A cast of nearly two dozen brings to life a vibrant mix of Baltimore characters, from the polished regulars of “The Corny Collins Show” to those on the margins.

The hit local TV dance program may celebrate style and popularity, but it quietly enforces narrow standards around race and body image.

That begins to change when Tracy Turnblad, a confident and unapologetically full-figured teenager, unexpectedly rises to on-air stardom and uses her newfound spotlight to push for integration.
