MFA Boston Announces Lineup of Virtual Programs Presented in Conjunction with Writing the Future: Basquiat and the Hip-Hop Generation

On January 21, the MFA presents the first-ever virtual performance by Gray, hosted in partnership with the Keith Haring Foundation.

The industrial noise band was founded in 1979 by Jean-Michel Basquiat and Michael Holman, named after the medical textbook Gray’s Anatomy—an importance reference for Basquiat’s visual artwork and an apt descriptive for the group's spectral, beat- and body-driven performances.

Today, Holman and original member Nick Taylor make up the band and carry its legacy forward.

During the performance, Gray will be joined by collaborators Deantoni Parks and Roger Guenveur Smith to create a multidisciplinary experience of sound, film, poetry, beat and body language. The concert will stream for free on Facebook, YouTube and mfa.org.

A curator-led, in-depth exhibition tour featuring interviews with Fab 5 Freddy, Futura, Lady Pink and Lee Quiñones will be available for purchase for $8 beginning January 28.

The 45-minute long, gallery-by-gallery walkthrough narrated by co-curators Liz Munsell and Greg Tate interweaves commentary by the artists on their works included in Writing the Future and on their direct experiences of this explosive moment in American art history.

If you haven't had a chance to visit the Jean-Michel Basquiat post-graffiti exhibit at the MFA this thought-provoking, colorfully eclectic exhibit of painting, sculpture, drawing, video, music, and fashion will surely stay with you. Here's a sneak peek.

In February, the MFA kicks off 'Hip-Hop Generations,' a monthly Sound Bites series that brings together performers who build on hip-hop's multidisciplinary history, which encompasses MCing, DJing, break dancing, fashion and graffiti.

Billy Dean Thomas (February 4)
Slick Vick with Cake Swagg and Bernadine (March 4)
REKS (April 1)
Brady Watt and Edo G (May 6)

Filmed in the exhibition galleries and hosted by Arielle Gray of WBUR’s The ARTery, the series explores how different generations have expanded upon and redefined early hip-hop, carving out a space for their unique contributions to this now-globally dominant culture.
