Imagine the joy you can bring to a child as you turn their make-believe fantasy into a reality.

As a WGBH Costume Character volunteer you can help.

In this role, you can bring a character from a child’s favorite PBS show, such as Clifford, Curious George, Arthur or Cat in the Hat, to life right before their eyes.

Volunteer costume characters are needed throughout the year during several WGBH events.

As a costume character, you will wear the costume of a PBS (WGBH) TV character and interact with guests during the event.

Characters do not speak so we look for volunteers who can be very animated, friendly and full of excitement to entertain the children.

Characters are very popular amongst the children so volunteers must be prepared for children to come flocking to them, grabbing their hands and squealing with delight.

Remember, they think you are REAL!

On the opposite side, there are also children who may be scared of the characters and therefore we ask for you to have good judgment and be able to read children’s reactions.

Of course performance experience is a plus, but not required.

There are certain size requirements for each character costume:
• Arthur (5’4”-5’9”, average build)
• Buddy the Dinosaur (no taller than 5’4”, petite build)
• Clifford (5’4”-5’9”, average build)
• Curious George (5’1”-5’3”, average build)
• Peep (5'3'-5'7', average build)
• Word Girl (5'4'-5'9', average build)
• Ruffman ( 5’4”-5’9”, average build)
• Cat in the Hat (5’4”-5’9’, average build)
• Martha Speaks (5’5”-5’9”, average build)

Volunteers should be of reasonable strength and stamina to wear their complete costume.

Character volunteers receive breaks throughout their shift.

Costume handlers will help you navigate through the crowd, will accompany you at all times and speak on your behalf.

Does this volunteer experience appeal to the kid in you?

If so, please email WGBH Volunteer Manager, Jaime Reese at [email protected] with your full name and email address for more information.
