hold - lyric first stage summer program photoLyric First Stage is our three-week summer program for young artists between the ages of 14 and 20 with a background or interest in musical theatre, including singing and acting.

Students will work with professional mentors who frequently perform in professional productions at the Lyric Stage Company of Boston in an environment that mirrors the challenges and rewards of working for a professional theatre.

The 2018 Summer Program will take place Monday-Friday, July 9-27, 2018, from 10:00AM-3:00PM; (with additional hours to be scheduled for the third week of technical rehearsals)

This program will be tailored to meet the needs of students from all ranges of experience.

This summer, our students will immerse themselves in works by and inspired by composer Stephen Sondheim, a musical icon and the ongoing focus of Lyric Stage. In addition, related non-Sondheim material may be explored.

Program Directors Jon Goldberg (Lyric Stage productions of Assassins, Sunday in the Park with George, A Little Night Music, Follies, Sweeney Todd, Sondheim on Sondheim, Road Show) and Leigh Barrett (Lyric Stage productions of Gypsy, Company, Sondheim on Sondheim, Sunday in the Park with George, A Little Night Music, Follies) will work with a small group of young artists to workshop, develop, rehearse, and produce a fully-staged musical showcase to culminate this three week program.

Students will also take field trips to the nearby Northeastern University Department of Theater for workshops on subjects ranging from physical theatre, audition monologues, and the process of selecting an undergraduate university theatre program.

By the end of the program, it is our goal that the students will have a firmer understanding and practical experience in musical theatre production, from audition to rehearsal to polished performance, and have the opportunity to explore what might be the next stage in their theatrical lives.

Placement & Meet and Greet:
Registered participants are required to join us on Saturday, June 17th from 10:00AM- 12:00PM to meet their peers and the Lyric Stage staff. During this morning session, each participant will be asked to sing a musical theatre song of their choice, so that Jon and Leigh can best tailor the program to meet everyone’s needs. We will also begin work on one of the group numbers for our showcase performance. There may also be short workshops throughout the Meet and Greet.
