Popular children's author Mo Willems is the spokesman in an upcoming video for Belmont World Film's 16th Annual Family Festival: Where Stories Come Alive! for children age 3-12, which runs January 18-21, 2019, in Arlington, Belmont, and Cambridge.

An animated version of Willems's NANETTE'S BAGUETTE, his latest rhyming picture book, will have its New England premiere as part of a program called 'Laugh Out Loud with Mo Willems' on Sunday, January 20.

But that's just one of many extraordinary films from around the world for kids--and adults--that's in store at this year's festival.

This year features fourteen programs--four shorts programs, eight feature length films, and two live events--originating from Belgium, Brazil, China, France, Germany, India, Serbia, the UK, and of course, the US.

There are two US premieres and several east coast premieres.

Highlights include:

- Opening night: Musicians from Alcolea & Company travel from France to perform a live original score along side a collage of silent films by the great George Melies, considered to be the inventor of cinema by the Lumiere brothers, and the undisputed father of special effects.

- The New England premiere of the Brazilian animated film TITO AND THE BIRDS, one of 25 submissions for the Oscar's Best Animated Film category in 2019.

- A live version of 'Circle Round,' WBUR's podcast for children age 4-10 that finds folktales from around the world and adapts them into action-packed radio plays, replete with original music and notable voices from the stage and screen.

This version will feature a sneak peek of 'The Woman in the Moon,' a magical Alaska Native tale about a woman who marries the moon, that has not yet been produced for radio!

- Three films about children in India, Serbia and China, respectively, who do not let their disabilities stop them, co-presented by the ReelAbilities Film Festival of Boston.

- Closing film: the Massachusetts premiere of CROSSROADS, a documentary about a group of at-risk African American teenagers at a North Carolina charter school who fight through the pain and adversity of childhood trauma to find salvation through lacrosse and go onto win the state championship after just three years.

It will be followed by a Q&A with the director, the team's coach, and one of the players, moderated by WBUR sports reporter and Boston Globe Sports Correspondent Shira Springer.
