Flying Horses Carousel at Martha's Vineyard
Come visit the Flying Horses - we are open on weekends in May 2023, then seven days a week, starting in June.The Flying Horses Carousel is the nations oldest platform carousel. Since 1884, the Flying Horses Carousel has delighted visitors in the town of Oak Bluffs.
The horses are hand carved and have real horse hair tails and tiny lead animals embedded in their glass eyes.
Try your luck at catching the brass ring and winning a free ride on the oldest working carousel in the U.S., which has been enchanting children and adults for over a hundred years. Kids of all ages love it! Many rings can be gotten, and if you get the gold one, you get to go again!
The Flying Horses are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Constructed by Charles Dare of New York Carousel Manufacturing in 1876, it is one of only two Dare carousels that still exist. Originally operated as an attraction on Coney Island, it was moved to Oak Bluffs in 1884 and includes stationary carved wooden horses with manes and tails of real horsehair and inset glass eyes. Each horse is brightly painted and fixed to the rotating platform by a metal post.
