coolidge on the greenway 2023 summer movies series photoExperience cinema classics under the stars! Coolidge on the Greenway will return for a free outdoor screening series on the Greenway this summer.

The Coolidge Corner Theatre (‘the Coolidge’) will once again take its popular Science on Screen® series on the road this summer, partnering with the Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy for free, outdoor 35mm screenings of three films (The Mummy, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, and It Came From Outer Space), introduced by local scientists.

Each screening will take place at sunset on The Greenway at Milk Street and Atlantic Avenue on three Wednesdays throughout the summer - June 21, July 12, and August 16, 2023.

Screenings will take place at sunset at the Greenway's Wharf District Park (located between Milk and India Streets in Boston). All films will be screened in 35mm.

2023 Movie Lineup - Wednesdays

Wednesday, June 21 (rain date: Thursday, June 22)
THE MUMMY (1999)
Format: 35mm
Runtime: 2h 4m

In celebration of the ongoing Brenaissance, the Coolidge presents a special screening of this ‘90s action-blockbuster, co-starring newly minted Academy Award® winner Brendan Fraser alongside Rachel Weisz. Before the film, Brown University Archaeologist and Egyptologist Dr. Laurel Bestock will discuss her own excavation and archaeological field work in Egypt.

Deep in the Egyptian desert, adventurer Rick O’Connell (Fraser) is enlisted by librarian Evelyn (Weisz) and a motley archeological crew to conquer the curse of the living dead — the vengeful reincarnation of the Egyptian priest Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo). Combining the thrills of a rousing adventure with the suspense of the legendary 1932 horror classic, The Mummy is a true nonstop action epic, filled with dazzling (if dated) visual effects, top-notch acting and superb storytelling.

Wednesday, July 12 (rain date: Thursday, July 13)
THE LOST WORLD: JURASSIC PARK
Format: 35mm
Runtime: 2h 9m

In Steven Spielberg’s follow-up to his 1993 smash hit Jurassic Park, Dr. John Hammond (Sir Richard Attenborough) summons chaos theorist Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) to his home with some startling information -- while nearly everything at his Jurassic Park had been destroyed, his engineers happened to have a second site, where other dinosaurs were kept in hiding. It seems the dinosaurs on the second island are alive and well and even breeding; and Hammond wants Malcolm to observe and document the reptiles before Hammond's financiers can get to them.

Wednesday, August 16 (rain date: Thursday, August 17)
IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE
Format: 35mm
Runtime: 1h 21m

This 1950s B-movie classic—co-written by Ray Bradbury—is a pulpy-but-effective psychological sci-fi picture, with a provocative message about xenophobia. Before the film, science and technology writer Wade Roush (Extraterrestrials) will discuss one of the great unsolved problems in science: is there life, intelligent or otherwise, on other planets?

While looking through his telescope one night, John Putnam (Richard Carlson) sees what at first appears to be a meteor shower -- but it is actually a crash-landing alien spaceship! After investigating the crater from the impact, John informs the town sheriff (Charles Drake), and receives nothing but ridicule. Even his fiancée, Ellen (Barbara Rush), is skeptical. All that changes when the townsfolk start disappearing, and are replaced by eerie alien duplicates.

Boston Light & Sound
For several years during the summer. Boston Light and Sound has provided 35mm film projection equipment in a custom projection booth on wheels! It is the Reel Thing! These shows also use a specially designed and installed sound system by the Film Techs at Boston Light & Sound (BLS).

BLS are masters of digital film installations but, are proud to treat the people of City of Boston to special authentic film experiences outside under the stars.

Watch specially curated films on an outdoor screen as part of the Coolidge’s Science on Screen program. The film protection booth can be seen in operation by all who come to the films.

These shows are fun, free and unique opportunities! Chapin Cutler, Larry Shaw and their talented film techs work alongside the professional projectionists of the Coolidge Corner Theatre. Come join us on the lawn at The Greenway!
