The Secret World of Elephants Exhibit at the EcoTarium
How do elephants “hear” with their feet, use 16 powerful muscles in their trunks, or reshape entire forests just by eating and walking?Step into The Secret World of Elephants and uncover the science, stories, and surprises behind these extraordinary animals.
On view March through September 2026, this immersive exhibition brings visitors face-to-face with elephants past and present, from a life-size woolly mammoth shedding its winter coat to today’s African and Asian elephants.
Developed by the American Museum of Natural History, the exhibition explores how elephants evolved, how they think and communicate, and how they shape ecosystems around the world.
Journey through five interactive areas:
Evolution – Travel back 60 million years to meet ancient relatives, handle touchable teeth casts, and explore how scientists trace mammoth migrations.
Body – Discover elephant anatomy through life-size projections, feel how low rumbles travel through the ground, and learn how elephants digest up to 500 pounds of food a day.
Mind – Listen to real elephant calls, observe social behaviors, and build your own elephant herd while exploring their deep family bonds.
Habitat – See how elephants engineer landscapes by digging water holes, spreading seeds, and opening forests for other species.
Elephants & Us – Explore cultural connections across history and meet modern conservation efforts, including the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary in Kenya.
Scientists warn that ivory demand, habitat loss, and climate change threaten the survival of the world’s remaining three elephant species.
This exhibition invites visitors to marvel at their abilities and consider what it will take to protect them.
