'Picturing Frederick Douglass: The Most Photographed American of the 19th Century' officially opens in the Museum’s Abiel Smith School exhibit galleries on Friday, July 15 (10am – 4pm).

The public is invited to the African Meeting House that evening (6:30pm) for a special screening of 'Frederick Douglass: When the Lion Wrote History,' featuring introductions by exhibit co-curator Dr. John Stauffer (Harvard) and director Orlando Bagwell (UC Berkeley).

The acclaimed documentary, broadcast nationally on PBS stations (1994) and narrated by Emmy Award-winning actress Alfre Woodard, follows the extraordinary life of the influential 19th-century abolitionist.

Viewers learn that Douglass was born enslaved, taught to read as a young boy, and continued his education throughout his life.

With renowned actor Charles Dutton giving voice to Douglass, and interviews with such luminaries as Drs.

David Blight and Lerone Bennett, the film features photos and footage of places Douglass lived and visited, and shows him as a persuasive speaker and civil rights activist.

Join us and participate in the Talk Back with Bagwell, view the exhibit, and enjoy light refreshments after the screening.

Orlando Bagwell is the director of 'Frederick Douglass: When the Lion Wrote History,' and a producer on the PBS series 'Africans in America: America’s Journey through Slavery.' Currently the head of the UC Berkley School of Journalism, Bagwell is known for his documentaries about the Civil Rights movement and the African American experience.

John Stauffer is one of the word's leading authorities on the Civil War era, protest movements, the life and legacy of Frederick Douglass, and photography.

He is an award-winning author who co-wrote the book 'Picturing Frederick Douglass: An Illustrated Biography of the Nineteenth Century's Most Photographed American' with Zoe Trodd, with whom he is co-curator of MAAH’s new exhibit.
