Please join us for the second meeting of Ty Burr's Movie Club! Each month, Ty Burr, former film critic and cultural columnist at The Boston Globe and Pulitzer Prize finalist, hosts a screening of one of his favorite movies, followed by a group discussion.
For August's meeting of the Movie Club, the West Newton Cinema will be showing Phantom Thread, director Paul Thomas Anderson's 2017 period drama.
In Ty's 2018 Globe review of the film, he describes it as 'a desperate struggle for dominance that doubles as the tenderest of love stories, between two people who are marvelous to behold and creepy as hell.'
The film received six Oscar nominations— including Best Picture, Directing, Actor in a Leading Role, and Actress in a Supporting Role— and won for Costume Design.
This is the last film featuring Oscar-winning actor Daniel Day-Lewis before his retirement.
Join Ty for an enthralling film and interesting conversation!
Your participation supports our efforts to preserve this beloved local theater.
The screening begins at 6pm, with discussion immediately following.
About the movie:
Renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock and his sister Cyril are at the center of British fashion in 1950s London -- dressing royalty, movie stars, heiresses, socialites and debutantes.
Women come and go in Woodcock's life, providing the confirmed bachelor with inspiration and companionship.
His carefully tailored existence soon gets disrupted by Alma, a young and strong-willed woman who becomes his muse and lover.
