The Boston area is home to an extraordinary tradition of inventive, award-winning documentary film and filmmakers whose work enriches our cultural and civic life.

Producer’s Circle builds upon this legacy, offering a pioneering platform where filmmakers, film enthusiasts, and potential sponsors converge to strengthen and expand the possibilities of engaging in and supporting this remarkable film scene.

A vibrant cross between a live pitching forum, a community salon, and an interactive crowdfunding event—Producer’s Circle offers a unique and innovative space to bring audiences into the heart of documentary production.

Producer’s Circle is an opportunity to:

• Experience excerpts of a filmmaker’s past work to understand their vision and craftsmanship.

• Engage directly with in-progress productions that need your support.

• Participate in shaping the final stages of a film’s journey, through discussion and financial contributions.

• Foster a Vibrant Film Community. Beyond supporting a single documentary, your participation helps strengthen Boston’s larger documentary scene.

By investing in these works-in-progress, you become part of a community pushing the boundaries of independent storytelling, inspiring future filmmakers, and expanding the city’s creative horizons.

Event Format

• Contextual Clips: Filmmakers present select clips from previous works.

These curated moments set the stage for understanding the filmmaker’s style and thematic interests.

• Work-in-Progress Presentation: Gain intimate insight into a rough or assembly cut of the new documentary.

Learn about the film’s central issues, production hurdles, narrative challenges, and artistic aspirations.

• Interactive Q&A:
- A moderated Q&A will take place touching on key storytelling choices, production strategies, or thematic elements followed by audience questions.

• Funding Opportunity: Attendees are invited to contribute to the film’s completion costs.

Your support can help secure music rights, finalize editing, or cover essential distribution expenses—directly impacting the film’s ability to reach audiences worldwide.

Supporters will receive benefits and recognition in accordance with each film’s funding structure.

The Great Experiment is both an intimate and sweeping cinematic portrait of America from 2016 to the present.

Observed primarily in two time periods, the film depicts and reflects on the state of our nation, presenting a unique time capsule of a nation grappling with its differences and diversity.

The Great Experiment has received support to date from Sundance Documentary Fund, The Tribeca Film Institute, ITVS, the New York State Council on the Arts, The McMillan-Stewart Foundation, the Hershey Family Foundation, as well as individual supporters.

Stephen Maing is an Emmy-award winning filmmaker and cinematographer based in New York City.
