Sabrina Aviles: Producer
The Pneumafractalist is about the life of autistic writer, actor and visual artist Harmon dot aut, who grew up in poverty in rural Kansas.
Harmon was a spirited, creative and naïve child, and like many autistic children, an easy target for the serial abuse of bullies and predatory adults.
Now 56 years old, Harmon was first diagnosed with autism only ten years ago.
In The Pneumafractalist Harmon returns to Kansas to direct an autobiographical film, informed by a new understanding of self.
The Pneumafractalist is a feature-length hybrid film that interweaves an eclectic mix of animation, nonfiction and narrative filmmaking, led by a cast of neurodivergent actors.
Produced in collaboration with neurodivergent actors and animators, the film is a unique opportunity to build understanding and empathy regarding the life experiences of those living with autism and neurodivergence.
James Rutenbeck (he/him) is an Emmy ® and two-time duPont Columbia Journalism Award-winning filmmaker.
His films have been seen at the Museum of Modern Art, The Centre Pompidou, National Gallery and on the public media series Independent Lens.
James was a 2019/20 Fellow at the Film Study Center at Harvard University and 2021 Poynter Fellow at Yale University.
The Pneumafractalist has received support to date from the LEF Foundation, the Hershey Family Foundation and the McMillan-Stewart Foundation.
