Every Saturday & Sunday, from mid-April to the second Sunday of November, Memorial Drive (Mem Drive to locals), is closed to traffic between Western Avenue and Mount Auburn Street, and open to recreation! Bring your bikes, scooters, inline skates, running shoes, strollers or walking feet to take advantage of the unique access to this normally busy road with views of the Charles each summer Sunday. When you are done, go grab lunch in Harvard Square.
Fun for all ages, families & visitors, Memorial Drive will be closed to traffic from 11:00am - 7:00pm.
Schedule and Background
State statute requires that Riverbend Park be open on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. between the last Sunday in April and the second Sunday in November. This means that the portion of Memorial Drive between Western Avenue and Gerry's Landing Road will close to cars so that pedestrians, cyclists and others can enjoy the riverfront roadway without cars.
Between Sunday, April 17, 2025 and Sunday, November 9, 2025, DCR will open Riverbend Parking each Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. for pedestrian and cyclist use, weather permitting.
