Every year since 1979, Candlelight Stroll at Strawbery Banke has captured 350 years of seasonal and holiday traditions against the backdrop of the museum’s historic houses.

Take a festive candlelight stroll through the museum grounds passing by costumed role players and performers who recreate the traditions of times past; including the Shapiro family preparing for Hanukkah in 1919, the Goodwin family perparing for a Victorian Christmas and the Abbotts who waited for news of their soldier fighting in WWII.

This year’s Candlelight Stroll theme, Midwinter Melodies, invites visitors to explore the lives of Puddle Dock families through holiday scenes inspired by classic winter songs.

Get in the holiday spirit with the hundreds of glowing candle lanterns and house doors and railings adorned with handmade decorations.

Strawbery Banke Museum’s furnished historic houses are adorned with handmade decorations created from greens and dried flowers from the Museum’s heirloom gardens.

While traveling from house to historic house, the glow of hundreds of lighted candle lanterns light the way and guests enjoy seasonal greetings from costumed roleplayers and performers who recreate the traditions of times past.

The historic houses are open for touring during Candlelight Stroll. Enjoy an old-fashioned holiday shopping experience at Pickwick's at the Banke, the Museum store.

Strawbery Banke’s Candlelight Stroll is an anchor for the Vintage Christmas in Portsmouth holiday celebration, along with The Music Hall, Chamber Collaborative of Greater Portsmouth, and the City of Portsmouth. Come to Candlelight Stroll and see why Travel + Leisure magazine calls Portsmouth “the Christmas capital of North America.”
