Each fall, dozens of varieties of enchanting heirloom chrysanthemums make their appearance in the Gardner’s Courtyard.

Isabella’s love of the flower and skill for growing them, even the specialty single-stem variety, are well documented.

Dozens of varieties of chrysanthemums appear in the Courtyard starting in early autumn.

Throughout the fall season, new colors and species of chrysanthemums and fall foliage plants make an appearance in the Courtyard Garden.

This display has a lot of history behind it, as Isabella grew many chrysanthemum varieties on her Brookline estate, Green Hill.

A pink-tinged chrysanthemum variety was named for Isabella.

The Gardner Museum is one of just a small handful of institutions in the United States that trains its mums using time-honored Japanese techniques.

One of the year’s most playful floral displays, the 2022 John Lowell Gardner Chrysanthemum Installation features both fan favorites and new varieties, single-stem forms as well as pruned garden mums and open, floral sprays.

Come see the curled and multicolored 'Lili Gallon,' the anemone-style 'Purple Light,' the sherbert orange 'River City,' and many more!

This gorgeous annual installation is named in memory of John Lowell Gardner, great grandnephew of Isabella and museum leader for many years.

It honors his lifetime of dedication to the Gardner and his love of the Courtyard, which he saw as the heart of the Museum.

Chrysanthemums and other fall species make their debut in the Courtyard each week through November.

Visit us again and again to enjoy these showy and colorful puffs, and learn more about this horticultural display on our website.
