Each summer, Walnut Hill School for the Arts welcomes hundreds of talented students from across the country and around the world to our Natick, Massachusetts campus for immersive summer arts programs in dance, theater, and visual art.
Students enhance their skills and work with expert faculty and peers who share their exceptional abilities and love for the arts.
The perfect blend of serious study and summer fun, Walnut Hill’s programs offer intensive training within a supportive, creative environment.
Summer Theater
June 18–July 22, 2018
The Summer Theater Program’s unique combination of studio classes and professionally
mounted stage productions allows students to both develop their craft and apply their skills in
performance. During the five-week boarding program for students ages 13–17, each participant
takes daily classes in acting, musical theater, and dance and is cast in a play and a musical, as
well as the ensemble of a second musical production. Class sizes are intentionally small,
affording students individualized attention and a supportive environment in which to develop
and strengthen their work. In the latter weeks of the program, actors take the stage for public
performances of the two plays and two musicals that they have been rehearsing; past
productions have included Chicago, Xanadu, As You Like It, and Twelve Angry Jurors.
Summer Dance
June 23–July 28, 2018
The Summer Dance Program is a five-week, pre-professional boarding intensive for dancers ages
13 to 17. In this comprehensive ballet-based program, students take daily classes in various
dance styles and physical training, while also learning about related topics such as injury
prevention and stage lighting. Our faculty is comprised of world-renowned dance educators who
have enjoyed careers as professional dancers. The program culminates in a repertory
performance open to family and friends.
Summer Youth Dance
June 23–August 11, 2018
Our three-week Summer Youth Dance Program is specially designed for dancers ages 10 to13,
offering small class sizes and three placement levels to maximize opportunities for individual
attention. Dancers can choose to attend as a day student or board on campus. Participants
experience a full range of dance classes—ballet technique, pointe or pre-pointe, variations,
modern, jazz, yoga, and choreography—taught by a faculty of world-renowned dance educators,
many of whom have danced professionally. The program ends with a final showcase open to
family and friends.
Summer Visual Art
July 23–August 10, 2018
Walnut Hill’s three-week, Summer Visual Art Program is designed for artists ages 12 to 17 who
are interested in refining their skills in visual art while exploring new techniques. The three-
week intensive program features a range of courses in ceramics, 2-D mixed media, sculpture,
and technical drawing. The program takes place in Walnut Hill’s Dartley Visual Art Center and
utilizes the School’s wide range of studio spaces. Classes are taught by diverse and talented
faculty members who have experience working with students at the K–12 and college levels.
Building a strong portfolio and spending time on the details to create an impressive body of
work is our main focus. At the close of the program, participants display their artwork in a
formal gallery exhibition and host a reception for family and friends.
