What the Fluff? is a madcap festival honoring the invention of Marshmallow Fluff in Union Square and Somerville’s proud tradition of innovation.
Join us for the celebration of Fluff, invented right here in Somerville’s Union Square in 1917 by Archibald Query.
This year’s theme Fluff Union: The Sweetest Square in Somerville showcases delightful and delectable tastes, sweet sights and sounds, incredible innovations, and community, sweet, community!
Discover tasty local treasures at your favorite neighborhood businesses, raise a pint of Fluff with friends old and new, dance in the streets, and make sweet memories at the most flufftastic end-of-summer celebration in New England.
This neighborhood feel-good event has fun for every age and variety of interests.
This madcap festival will celebrate the invention of marshmallow Fluff with musical performances, a cooking contest, fun for every age and Fluff treats of every sort.

Scores of local businesses open their doors – and patios! – to lure Fluff lovers to a safe yet scrumptiously sticky soiree unlike ever before.
Fluff enthusiasts will delight in Fluffalicious Feasts, Flufftastic Fluff Stuff, and frolicking with fellow friends-in-Fluff, making this What the Fluff?, the sweetest evah.
Youngsters can enjoy interactive games at Knucklebones; fan favorites like Fluff bowling and Pin the F on the Fluff boy are at the Midway Area; and all are welcome to ride on the Roaming Railroad train.
Union Square eateries, breweries, cafes, shops, and Fluff fans look onward and fluffward together as each participating business cooks up their own special take on celebrating this Square’s roots.

The Fluff Festival presents fun and zany activities for everyone! Youngsters can enjoy
interactive games at Knucklebones; fan favorites like Fluff bowling and Pin the F on the
Fluff boy are at the Midway Area; and all are welcome to ride on the Roaming Railroad
train. You’ll be in stitches from the hilarious antics at the Shenanigans Stage, with sticky
activities like Fluff jousting, Fluff Musical Chairs, Blind Man’s Fluff and even Fluff
Come hungry and ready to shop, because over 40 local vendors will be selling both sweet
and savory Fluff-inspired dishes, as well as a variety of Fluff-themed crafts. Where else
can you try Fluff inspired creations at a nearby bar or restaurant?
And in between the sticky-sweet games, funky crafts and fabulous fluff creations, enjoy
live music and entertainment on the Main Stage. This year’s performances include local
funk favorites The Neprok! Allstars, the groovy 12-piece extravaganza known as Booty
Vortex, and the sassy, smooth Miss Fairchild. Add in a few sensational burlesque
performances by the Flufferettes, and local radio star and Blues sensation Holly Harris as
our emcee, and you’d better be ready to dance!
This year, COVID-conscious What the Fluff? stares adulting down like only Somerville can.
No FOMO here!
- For event parking in Union Square: After banking hours the Citizens Bank at 40 Union Square is available. Also the Argenziano School at 290 Washington St.
