The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA), and longstanding partner Citizens invite the community to enjoy a free open house celebrating Juneteenth, the oldest nationally recognized commemoration of the ending of slavery in the U.S. Drop-in activities include:

Portrait-making activity on the Huntington Lawn (10 am–3 pm)—the finished artworks will be featured in the crowdsourced Portraits of Leadership installation that will be presented alongside The Obama Portraits Tour arriving at the MFA in September

Spotlight Talks (11 am, 12 pm, 1 pm and 3 pm) in Touching Roots: Black Ancestral Legacies in the Americas, a new exhibition that traces narratives of Blackness across the Atlantic world

Outdoor performances of “The Most Estranged Fruits” (11:30 am–12 pm, 2:15–2:45 pm, and 4–4:30 pm) presented by Danny Rivera, lead organizer with The Artist Initiative for Revolution (AIR Boston)

A City Talks conversation (1 pm) with artists Stephen Hamilton and Danny Rivera, moderated by Therlande Louissaint and Marlyn Urquiza of SIDE Presents

The event offers free admission and access to special exhibitions for Massachusetts residents—tickets will be available in person on a first-come, first-served basis.

ROXBURY INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL (June 23–July 2) | The Roxbury International Film Festival (ROXFILM) is the largest festival in New England celebrating people of color around the world.

This year's festival takes place both in person and online, presenting narrative and documentary features, shorts, animation, experimental and youth films. The festival also holds workshops, panel discussions, discussions with filmmakers and networking opportunities.

Highlights of the in-person screenings at the MFA include the opening night feature Remember Me: The Mahalia Jackson Story, a soaring biopic about one of the most gifted gospel vocalists of the 20th century, and the world premiere of Ubuntu, a documentary about a group of heroic women in Cape Town.

SUNSET CINEMA (June 28) | In partnership with the Roxbury International Film Festival, the MFA is hosting a free outdoor screening of Love Jones, freshly restored for its 25th anniversary by Criterion Collection. The beloved romantic drama will be preceded by a Q&A with Regie Gibson, a poet, songwriter, author, workshop facilitator and educator. Gibson's poetry is an integral part of Love Jones; his poem “Brother to the Night (A Blues for Nina)” appears on the movie soundtrack and is performed by the film’s star, Larenz Tate.
